Each comes with its own cork plug that is finished by the customer to fit as desired.

Once a standard accessory on split bamboo rods, ferrule plugs are now available from Classic Sporting Enterprises, the master ferrule crafters. Ferrule plugs not only prevent moisture and contaminants from entering the female ferrule during storage periods, but also add a touch of distinction not usually found on contemporary rods. The primary cause of pre-mature ferrule wear is particles of dust (abrasives) that collect in the female ferrule and consequently wear the metal surfaces.

Machined from aircraft aluminum alloy and fitted with an oversize cork arbor, installation of the ferrule plug is a simple matter. The part was designed to be fitted with the use primarily of a small lathe, however a drill press of an electric drill can also be used successfully.

The thin flange of the plug can be carefully secured in a 3-jaw chuck without danger of damaging the head, which is slightly smaller in diameter than the flange. A live center mounted in the lather tailstock should be inserted in to the small center-drilled hole of the plug spindle for true turning. Sliding the cork arbor to the end of the spindle, carefully sand it's surface while maintaining a constant diameter. The lathe tailstock should be loosened and withdrawn for frequent trial fitting in the female ferrule. Once the desired fit if obtained, then the cork arbor should be permanently glued to the aluminum spindle, up against the bottom side of the flange. After the adhesive has set, the excess spindle protrusion can be removed. Some smaller size of ferrules will require minor shortening for full depth imbedment.
